Clinic Details

Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is the largest diagnostic and acute care hospital in the West Kootenays, serving 80,000 people in the Kootenay Boundary region. This 75-bed full-service regional hospital offers core specialist physician services, including:

• 24-hour Emergency and Trauma Services
• Level 2 Laboratory
• Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• Acute and Obstetrical Care
• Orthopedics, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology, and Psychiatry
• Chemotherapy and advanced diagnostic services

KBRH is the regional base for the 24-hour High Acuity Response Team (HART), consisting of dedicated critical care transport nurses and respiratory therapists who support rural and remote clinicians in transporting and managing critically ill and injured patients. Transport is supported by BC Ambulance Services (BCAS) for major medical care, with transfers to Kelowna (313 kilometers from Trail).

About the Role

We are actively recruiting a 0.6 FTE General Practitioner in Oncology (GPO) to join Dr. Katie Forman in the GP Oncology Program at KBRH. The selected physician will deliver a range of cancer services to patients with all possible tumor sites, primarily in the outpatient setting but also supporting inpatient, indirect, and remote care. This role involves caring for patients throughout their entire treatment pathway, from primary treatment to survivorship.

Responsibilities

• Supervision of treatment using chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy
• Patient education, supportive care, and end-of-life/palliative care planning
• Management of acute toxicities, dose adjustments, and modification of treatment plans
• Support for infusions and visit summaries
• Ongoing surveillance and monitoring of patients post-treatment for cancer recurrence or treatment-related complications
• Collaborative practice as a member of an interdisciplinary team, consulting with other health professionals as needed
• Acting as a resource to the oncology patient’s primary care provider and other healthcare providers on cancer care issues (e.g., guidance during work-up of suspected cancer patients, addressing referral process questions, sharing management information)

This role is profoundly meaningful to patients and does not involve on-call service or evening work. No previous oncology experience is required; the department will support the successful applicant in developing the requisite expertise.

GP Oncology Training

The mandatory GP oncology training is an 8-week course, including 4 weeks of online didactic learning and 6 weeks of practical training with the BC Cancer Agency. Compensation and Benefits

Compensation Type: Clinical Service Contract

Estimated Remuneration: Competitive, with no overhead costs

May be eligible for additional remuneration under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:

• Retention Premium: 11.48%
• Retention Flat Fee: $17,791
• Relocation Funding: $9,000 if moving within BC, $12,000 within Canada, and $15,000 from outside Canada
• Recruitment Incentive: $15,000 (prorated for physicians working less than full-time)

Additional benefits include:

• RCME funding: $440 for up to 2 years in Trail, $2,640 during the 3rd and 4th year, and $4,840 after 4 years, in addition to Doctors of BC CME funds
