Family Law Attorney

About the role
Maryland Legal Aid seeks a full-time Supervising Attorney for the Tenant Right to Counsel Project (TRCP) in the Baltimore County office in Towson, Maryland. The Supervising Attorney will plan the TRCP unit’s work, implement its priorities, supervise and evaluate staff to ensure high-quality legal representation, and carry a caseload. The role involves supervising advocates in delivering legal services—including advice, representation, outreach, and advocacy—in landlord-tenant, real property, and public/subsidized housing matters in a client-centered, compassionate manner.
Responsibilities
- Tenant Right to Counsel Project (TRCP) Leadership
- Plan and assign the legal work of the TRCP unit in coordination with the Chief Attorney, including client intake and case assignments.
- Develop strategies to address systemic issues within the TRCP unit.
- Support hiring efforts to attract mission-aligned staff.
- Support local implementation of Access to Counsel in Evictions efforts in Baltimore County.
- Staff Supervision, Training, and Professional Development
- Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to staff attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, and administrative staff in coordination with the Chief Attorney.
- Monitor and supervise case handling to ensure high-quality representation, including reviewing substantive legal work and assisting with appellate litigation.
- Guide staff professional development, including co-counseling cases and providing evaluations of advocacy efforts, caseloads, and productivity.
- Identify and address staff training needs.
- Ensure compliance with timekeeping and grant-reporting obligations.
- Handle personnel matters (e.g., grievances, disciplinary actions) in consultation with the Chief Attorney and executive staff.
- Client Representation and Legal Advocacy
- Represent and defend clients in Baltimore County Circuit and District Courts.
- Maintain case records in the Legal Server case management system.
- Community Engagement, Grant Compliance, and Administrative Responsibilities
- Encourage staff engagement with the community and participate in outreach and education initiatives.
- Assist the Chief Attorney with data collection, grant reporting, and administrative compliance.
- Fill in for the Chief Attorney during extended absences and perform other managerial duties as assigned.
- Pursue professional development through trainings and programs sponsored by Maryland Legal Aid.
- Support Maryland Legal Aid’s strategic plan in litigation, advocacy, communications, and community education.
- Represent Maryland Legal Aid in inter-agency workgroups, task forces, and other bodies.
- Perform other duties within the scope of the position’s essential functions.
Requirements
- Admitted to practice in Maryland or eligible for admission (out-of-state attorneys must take the next scheduled bar exam following employment).
- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Five or more years of experience as a practicing attorney, with preference for litigation experience in landlord-tenant, public/subsidized housing, and consumer law.
- Knowledge of civil law principles, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
- Proficiency with computers, web-based applications, and Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and balance a full workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to providing quality legal advocacy for a low-income, diverse client base.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally in Maryland as needed.
- Preferred: Knowledge of Westlaw Edge or other legal research software; prior experience in public-interest litigation or nonprofit legal services; two or more years of supervisory/leadership experience.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in an office setting with regular interaction via telephone, videoconference, email, and in-person. Some duties may occur in community settings or Baltimore County courtrooms.
