About the role

The Akron Board of Education is seeking a Family Consumer Science Instructor to join their team. This position is anticipated to start at a salary of $48,967.10 and will be compensated at the hourly extended time rate if needed. The position is a State Teachers Retirement System position and requires a valid Ohio resident educator, professional, permanent, or five-year career-technical teaching license.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Office of College and Career Academies to design, organize, and deliver skill-training programs aligned with the Quality Program Standards Rubric.
  • Develop and implement a curriculum outline, guides, and graded course of study that adheres to Ohio Department of Education guidelines.
  • Plan and teach career cluster classes, including classroom instruction, speakers' bureaus, field experiences, shadowing, internships, mentoring, college visits, early placement, advanced training options, and apprenticeships.
  • Collaborate with community partners to market program successes and recruit students.
  • Assist in the development of the curriculum outline, guides, and graded course of study utilizing the appropriate standards for the program.
  • Manage student occupational opportunities through school-based learning, work-based learning, and connective activities.
  • Establish and work closely with an Academy Advisory Board as outlined by the Quality Program Rubric.
  • Develop and maintain an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) as mandated by the State of Ohio to maintain proper certification/license.
  • Maintain communication with parents and students through various methods like phone calls, visits, parent/teacher conferences, report card pickups, and written communications.
  • Participate in local, state, and national student organization activities.
  • Support students in securing employment and obtaining industry certifications/credentials.
  • Enhance classroom instruction by implementing technology and reporting to and carrying out any other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.

Requirements

  • Currently hold a Family Consumer Science (FCS) teaching license issued by the state of Ohio; or - Currently hold a Career Technical Education teaching license eligible to teach courses in the Culinary (L0) or Hospitality (L1) pathways; - Education Eligible for a teaching license in the above pathways documented by a current CTE-36 and complete the eligibility process as determined by your level of formal education: - Bachelor Degree in Hospitality or Culinary Arts with evidence of at least two years of recent work experience; - Associate's degree in Hospitality or Culinary Arts with evidence of at least three years of recent work experience; - High school diploma or equivalent and evidence of at least five years of recent work experience in Hospitality or Culinary Arts.
  • Be eligible to obtain a Family Consumer Science supplemental teaching license: - Must hold a valid Ohio resident educator, professional, permanent or five-year career-technical teaching license; - Baccalaureate degree; - Pass the Family Consumer Science content-knowledge exam; - Employed as a teacher for a minimum of two years under the supplemental license.
  • Obtain and keep current all industry standard certifications/credentials or designations required by the state for career technical funding.
  • Meet all district requirements for entry-year teachers including Four Year Resident Educator and/or PAR.
  • Meet State of Ohio CTE Quality Program Standards (QPS) criteria.
  • Willing to attend required third party curriculum training.
