Tennessee Donor Services (TDS) is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic team member to join us in saving lives through organ donation. Our mission is to save lives, and we seek professionals who embrace this important work, particularly those with expertise in communicating in difficult situations and building relationships with patients and their families.

About the Role

As a Family Care Coordinator, you will work with organ donor families, hospital personnel, physicians, and other TDS team members to facilitate the donation process for organ and tissue donation. The primary work environment is in hospitals across the Nashville area and throughout Tennessee. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats are essential.

Family Care Coordinators (FCCs) support and educate the potential donor’s next-of-kin regarding donation options. FCCs determine family dynamics and assess the family’s understanding of the patient’s prognosis to aid in the donation process. They work alongside clinical team members and hospital staff to advocate for donation and serve as a resource to the donor’s family.

  • Initiate the donation discussion and authorization process for potential organ and tissue donor families prior to, during, and after death declaration.
  • Provide families with detailed information required to give legal informed authorization for anatomical donation.
  • Respond on-site independently or with assigned staff to all appropriate hospital referrals within designated timeframes per policy and procedure.
  • Communicate with attending physicians and healthcare team members to establish rapport and ensure a collaborative approach for the donation discussion and authorization process.
  • Obtain authorization for donation per UAGA and verify appropriate medical and legal documentation.
  • Visually assess donors, interpret charts, document information, and communicate findings.
  • Collaborate with hospital and medical staff to provide potential donor families with accurate and timely information regarding the patient’s clinical course.
  • Maintain communication with hospital staff and attending physicians regarding the potential donor family’s understanding of the prognosis and act as a family advocate as necessary.
  • Provide education to hospital staff regarding authorization, family care processes, and the donation process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, with responsibilities potentially affected by increased donor activity.
