Faculty - School of Medical Imaging and Therapeutics - Clinical Educator - Echocardiography

MCPHS University’s School of Medical Imaging and Therapeutics invites applications for a full-time faculty position embedded at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as a clinical educator in the Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography – Echocardiography program.

About the role

The faculty member will teach classroom, laboratory, and online courses; supervise up to six students per semester during their clinical rotations at BIDMC; and engage in service and scholarship activities. Responsibilities span didactic instruction, clinical mentoring, program accreditation support, and participation in university and professional-service commitments.

Responsibilities

• Perform all duties of a cardiac sonographer at BIDMC, including scanning, protocol adherence, preliminary reporting, and urgent-findings management.
• Supervise and mentor MCPHS DMS students during clinical rotations, reinforcing scanning techniques, measurement guidelines, pathology recognition, and protocol compliance.
• Follow BIDMC echocardiography policies (e.g., saline-contrast studies, ultrasound-enhancing-agent utilization, critical-findings reporting).
• Attend BIDMC echo-lab staff meetings and leadership meetings related to student development.
• Assist in developing guidelines and standards to ensure continuity between the clinical setting and the DMS program.
• Deliver didactic, laboratory, and experiential instruction in multiple formats (in-person, online, blended).
• Provide students with an approved syllabus outlining course objectives, learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies, readings, assignments, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
• Support the dean, program director, clinical coordinator, and faculty in maintaining programmatic accreditation, the clinical manual, and clinical rules.
• Design engaging assignments that demonstrate real-world applications of echocardiography concepts.
• Participate in service activities, including committee work, regional/national organization involvement, community representation, and university ceremonies.
• Engage in scholarship resulting in conference presentations, publishable manuscripts, peer-reviewed instructional materials, or other scholarly outcomes.
• Use the University’s learning management system to post syllabi, assignments, and communicate with students.
• Advise and assist students through office hours, scheduled appointments, phone, email, and other approved mechanisms.
• Attend and participate in monthly School and Department meetings, University ceremonies, and assigned committee work.
• Contribute to periodic reviews and revisions of departmental course offerings.
• Maintain advanced knowledge in echocardiography and related disciplines.
• Build and maintain relationships with professional organizations, including membership and involvement in the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).
• Regularly assess clinical students using MCPHS protocols, forms, and timelines.

• Work independently and interact effectively with students, faculty, administration, alumni, healthcare professionals, and external constituents.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred).
• RDCS or RCS credential; Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) preferred.
• BLS certification.
• Minimum of 5 years of work experience in echocardiography.
• Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience at the college/university level preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of teaching students in the clinical setting preferred.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Evidence of teaching excellence.

Physical Requirements

• On-campus work requires sitting, standing, and walking during classroom instruction.
• Active lab instruction involves moving between student imaging bays.
• Clinical-site work requires sitting, standing, scanning, and walking as part of normal operations.
• Ability to use technology, including typing and manipulating a mouse/mouse pad.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 15 lbs.
