Under the supervision of the Coordinator I-Facility Operations (Recreation Center), the Facility Supervisor (Recreation Center) ensures the safe and smooth operation of ASI facilities and programs. This role serves as the first responder for injuries, emergency leader, and on-site supervisor of student staff. In the absence of full-time staff or a Student Manager, the Facility Supervisor assumes managerial responsibility and general oversight of ASI programs in the Recreation Center, Sports Complex, and Doerr Family Field. The position requires sound judgment, ethical decision-making, and alignment with ASI’s commitment to the University Learning Objectives, including ethics, diversity, sustainability, and effective communication.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general oversight of Membership Services Student Assistants, Pro Shop Student Assistants, Intramural Sports student staff, and Lifeguards.
  • Assume management authority and supervise student staff in the absence of full-time staff members.
  • Supervise program participants' behavior and intervene when necessary.
  • Maintain positive relationships with staff and co-workers, demonstrating awareness and appreciation for diversity.
  • Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures.
  • Direct the evacuation of the Recreation Center, Sports Complex, and Doerr Family Field during emergencies, maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
  • Respond to first aid situations, including minor injuries and life-threatening emergencies.
  • Document all injuries and incidents accurately and thoroughly.
  • Contact University Police when on-site personnel cannot resolve issues.
  • Identify and address safety concerns, ensuring timely resolution and reporting.
  • Supervise ASI programs and events to safeguard staff and participant well-being.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Recreation Center, Sports Complex, and Doerr Family Field, including opening, closing, and securing facilities.
  • Inspect facilities for safety and maintenance concerns.
  • Provide breaks for student staff, serve as a backup for absent employees, and cover no-show shifts using phone lists.
  • Compile daily user statistics, facility reports, and incident documentation.
  • Communicate maintenance and custodial concerns to Facilities staff.
  • Monitor event use, recognize potential crowd control issues, and address them proactively.
  • Conduct regular facility rounds to ensure safe and appropriate activities.
  • Set up and take down special equipment (e.g., volleyball nets, wallyball, audio-visual equipment).
  • Maintain inventory control for storage rooms.
  • Act as an ASI representative with extensive knowledge of ASI and University programs, facilities, and services.
  • Assist other ASI staff areas with program preparation and operation as needed.
  • Provide a welcoming, inclusive environment and quality customer service for all staff and participants.
  • Attend at least two hours of safety and evacuation training per quarter for the Recreation Center.
  • Receive constructive criticism and apply lessons learned for continual development.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, trainings, workshops, and retreats.
  • Work a minimum of one shift per week at the Cal Poly Recreation Center during the academic year.
  • Comply with the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act as a mandated reporter.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled Cal Poly student with a minimum of 6 units (4 units for graduate students).
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Facility security experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record per ASI’s insurance underwriters.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, including those with special needs.
  • Experience with program participation, administration, supervision, advising, or public relations preferred.
  • General knowledge of Recreation Center program services.
  • Leadership or management experience.
  • Program-specific experience preferred.

Benefits

  • Hourly pay rate: $17.40 per hour.

Schedule

  • Position requires a minimum of two consecutive terms of work availability.
  • May require working late nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Minimum of one shift per week at the Cal Poly Recreation Center during the academic year.
