Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Utilities)
About the role
The Facilities department at the University at Buffalo invites applications for our Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Utilities) position. This position will assist in the following tasks supporting the chillers, boilers, cooling towers, ancillary utility equipment and mechanical spaces associated with the Chilled water, Hot Water and Steam systems:
- Inspection
- Preventative maintenance
- Start-up
- Operation
- Diagnostics
- Repair
- Maintenance
- Chemical treatment
- Cleaning
Responsibilities
Working in this position can lead to growth opportunities toward Plant Utility Assistant, Plant Utility Engineer and other challenging positions.
Requirements
- The candidate must demonstrate the ability to understand directions
- The candidate should possess a general knowledge of maintenance tools and skills
- This position requires traveling within and between campuses
- A valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is required, or candidate should otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position
- The incumbent may be required to work during adverse weather conditions to ensure continuous operation of all BMS and HVAC systems
Qualifications
- There are no education or experience qualifications for this class
- Applicants must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and be able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions
- When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated

- Plumbing experience
- HVAC experience
- Fall Arrest training
- Lock-out/Tag-out training
- Completed HVAC training
- Confined Space training
- Chemical Treatment training
- General Mechanic experience
- Boiler training/experience
