About the role
This position involves assisting with fish hatchery operations, stocking, and maintenance tasks at the Department of Environmental Conservation.
Responsibilities
- Assist in cleaning fish tanks, feeding fish, and collecting fish samples
- Hand load hatchery stocking trucks
- Participate in the Cayuga Lake Wild Lake Trout Egg Take
- Pick and sort fish from nets on a pontoon boat pulling a 300-foot gill net
- Perform landscape work, facility maintenance, and equipment upkeep
Requirements
- Physically able to perform the tasks of the position
- Able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions
- Possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated (when required)
- Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet transportation needs
- Able to work in adverse weather conditions
- Must be able to lift and move objects up to 44 pounds
- Certification to operate motorized boats or personal watercrafts at time of appointment
Travel, overtime, overnight travel, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on and maintaining boats
- Experience working with and repairing gill nets
