About the role
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is recruiting for the Facility Maintenance Technician I (FMT I) position. This entry-level role involves performing maintenance and construction work on various facilities such as bridges, buildings, highways, and more. Employees work independently or as part of a team, handling tasks ranging from routine upkeep to more complex projects.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain motorized equipment and tools necessary for facility upkeep.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety standards in facilities.
- Handle tasks such as moving heavy objects, working at heights, and operating in confined spaces.
- Respond to emergencies and perform maintenance during non-standard hours as needed.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and adhere to environmental regulations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class C driver’s license with less than four points.
- Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) during the probationary period.
- Pass hazardous materials training and be able to wear a respirator if necessary.
Qualifications
- Physical ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills to interact with colleagues and the public.
Skills
- Proficiency with basic hand tools and power equipment.
- Understanding of safety and environmental regulations.
- Basic computer literacy for job-related tasks.

Pay
Salary range: $21.13 - $25.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
Schedule
Rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
