About the role

The Facilities Operations Technician is responsible for the daily maintenance, repair, and operation of the School's buildings, grounds, and campus infrastructure during the afternoon shift. Working under the direction of the Senior Manager of Facilities & Operations, this position performs preventive maintenance, responds to maintenance requests, supports school events and facility rentals, conducts campus security checks, and helps ensure the campus remains safe, clean, and ready for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Facilities & Operations, this position serves as the primary Facilities and Operations presence during afternoon and evening hours. It plays an important role in maintaining the School's facilities while supporting the day-to-day needs of the campus community.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on building systems
  • Troubleshoot maintenance issues and complete corrective repairs within the scope of the position
  • Assist with the maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and life safety systems
  • Identify equipment deficiencies and report repairs requiring specialized contractors or capital replacement
  • Support equipment installations, seasonal maintenance, and facility improvement projects
  • Receive, prioritize, document, and complete assigned work orders using the School's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs throughout the campus, including carpentry, painting, drywall repairs, door and hardware repairs, minor plumbing, ceiling systems, flooring, and other general building maintenance
  • Maintain classrooms, offices, athletic facilities, common spaces, and exterior areas in a safe, clean, and well-maintained condition
  • Safely operate maintenance equipment, hand tools, power tools, lifts, utility vehicles, and other departmental equipment
  • Prepare classrooms, meeting spaces, athletic facilities, performance venues, and campus gathering areas for school events, athletic competitions, admissions events, performances, Board meetings, and other special programs
  • Complete room reconfigurations, furniture moves, event setup, breakdown, and post-event restoration
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, Athletics, Dining Services, and event coordinators to support afternoon and evening activities
  • Deliver furniture, equipment, mail, packages, and supplies throughout campus as needed
  • Serve as the Facilities and Operations representative during assigned facility rentals and evening programs
  • Ensure facilities are prepared before occupancy, provide building access, respond to operational needs, and secure buildings following rental activities
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors performing work during afternoon and evening hours
  • Conduct routine building and campus security rounds throughout the shift
  • Secure buildings by checking doors, lighting, mechanical rooms, and common areas at the end of the day
  • Identify and report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and security issues
  • Assist with emergency response activities and help maintain a safe campus environment
  • Assist with maintaining campus grounds and exterior spaces throughout the year
  • Perform snow and ice removal, including sidewalks, entrances, stairways, emergency exits, and pedestrian walkways
  • Pre-treat walkways before forecasted snow or ice events and participate in campus weather response activities
  • Work collaboratively with Facilities & Operations staff, custodial and dining service partners, contractors, and other members of the school community
  • Provide professional, courteous service to students, faculty, staff, families, visitors, and vendors
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Facilities & Operations Department
  • Flexibility to support school events, facility rentals, snow removal, and emergency response when needed

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three or more years of experience in commercial, institutional, educational, healthcare, or industrial facilities maintenance, or a related field
  • Working knowledge of building maintenance practices and building systems
  • Mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot maintenance and equipment issues
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, and maintenance equipment
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team
  • Valid driver's license
  • Contingent on successful CORI and fingerprint-based background checks and Mandated Reporter training as a condition of employment

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience working in an independent school, college, university, healthcare, or similar institutional environment
  • Familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or building automation systems
  • OSHA 10 certification or other facilities-related certifications

Physical requirements

This position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working from personnel lifts as needed. The employee must be able to lift and move furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier items using appropriate lifting equipment or team lifting procedures. The position includes indoor and outdoor work throughout the year in varying weather conditions. It requires flexibility to support evening events, emergencies, snow removal operations, and other operational needs outside of the normal work schedule when required. Must follow all applicable safety procedures, OSHA requirements, school policies, and environmental regulations while performing assigned duties.

Pay

$27/hr to $37/hr depending on experience and certifications

Schedule

Full-time, 12 months – Monday through Friday. There is flexibility around when the shift starts, with the earliest start time being 10am.
