Facilities Maintenance Worker
About the role
The Facilities Maintenance Worker plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of all school buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on buildings, equipment, and grounds
- Conduct daily traffic control during student drop-off and pick-up
- Perform janitorial and cleaning duties to maintain a hygienic environment
- Maintain and care for school landscaping and irrigation systems
- Troubleshoot and repair issues related to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general construction
- Monitor campus security and ensure the safety and well-being of all occupants
- Aid in emergency response and resolve unsafe conditions promptly
- Support and assist during school events, including setup and breakdown
- Take the lead on smaller maintenance projects as assigned
- Ensure compliance with OSHA safety and health regulations
- Check and respond to email and utilize Google-based platforms for communication and task tracking
- Perform other duties as assigned by administration
Requirements
- Positive, customer service-oriented attitude with patience in a school environment
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and excellent attendance
- Good judgment and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, or adjusted schedules in response to emergencies, urgent projects, or school events
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Basic computer skills, including email communication and Google Workspace platforms
- Understanding of OSHA compliance and workplace safety standards
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Knowledge of basic trades: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general construction
- Experience with landscaping, irrigation systems, and grounds maintenance
- Background or training in security operations
- Prior experience working in a school or educational setting
- OSHA certification or formal safety training

Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs; occasionally lift up to 75–100 lbs with assistance
- Stand, walk, and remain on feet for extended periods (6–8+ hours per shift)
- Bend, stoop, kneel, squat, and crouch on a regular basis
- Climb ladders and work safely at heights using stepladders, extension ladders, and aerial lifts
- Crawl into and work within confined spaces such as under flooring, above ceilings, and in mechanical rooms
- Push and pull heavy equipment including carts and dollies
- Use hand tools and power tools requiring manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Use repetitive hand and arm motions (scrubbing, mopping, painting, tightening fittings)

- Work in varying environmental conditions including heat, humidity, cold, noise, dust, and chemical exposure
- Wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety footwear, gloves, hard hat, and respirator as required
- Maintain physical stamina for full-shift outdoor and indoor work in Hawaii's climate
