FACILITIES MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN
About The Position
The Department of Waste Management seeks qualified applicants to submit resumes for immediate consideration for one position located in Moreno Valley for the Truck Mechanic classification. Under general supervision, to perform journey level work in overhauling and repairing heavy diesel and gasoline trucks; and to do other work as required.
Essential Duties
- Inspects and diagnoses mechanical failures and defects in a variety of heavy trucks.
- Rebuilds or repairs engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, axles, steering gears, carburetors, cooling systems, and other mechanical and electrical assemblies.
- Performs complete tune-ups on carburetion, fuel injection, and ignition systems.
- Replaces and adjusts air, hydraulic and vacuum brakes, starters, and generators.
- Performs repairs on smaller automotive equipment when required; performs rough welding; keeps time and material records.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized heavy duty truck mechanic apprenticeship training program.
- Four years of experience in the repair and overhaul of heavy diesel and gasoline powered vehicles. Two years of the required experience may be substituted on the basis of: Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in trade related courses taken at a recognized college being equal to six months of experience. OR Completion of 144 hours of trade related instruction taken at a union training center, adult school, vocational school or specialized industrial program being equal to six months of experience.
Knowledge
- The principles of both gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines;
- The methods, tools, equipment, and parts used in the repair and maintenance of heavy trucks;
- The operations and uses of diagnostic equipment;
- Microsot Word and Excel programs.
Ability
- To diagnose the source of mechanical and electrical failures in heavy gasoline and diesel powered trucks;
- To read and understand shop manuals and mechanical diagrams;
- To follow written and oral directions;
- To perform work safely.
