Fabrication Floater
About the role
We are seeking a Fabrication Floater to support production across multiple areas of a structural steel fabrication shop. This is a versatile, hands-on position for someone who is willing to learn, cross-train, and step into different areas of the shop based on production needs. Prior fabrication experience is not required. The most important requirements are the ability to accurately read a tape measure, a willingness to learn, and comfort working in a physical manufacturing/fabrication environment. This opportunity is well suited for someone with experience in construction, manufacturing, machine operation, sheet metal, CNC, welding, or other hands-on industrial work who wants to develop into a well-rounded fabricator.
This position supports a broad range of shop activities, which may include reading drawings and fabrication prints, layout, fit-up, cutting, drilling, torching, grinding, welding, painting, machine operation, material handling, and crane-supported material movement. Material handling represents approximately 50% of the shop environment, while welding represents approximately 10–15% of the overall work. Candidates should therefore be comfortable performing a variety of responsibilities rather than expecting to specialize in one task.
Flexibility is a major part of this position. When one machine or production area does not have work available, employees are expected to remain productive by learning another machine or process, assisting with fabrication or material handling, supporting another department, or cleaning and organizing the work area. The goal is for the individual to develop into a more complete fabricator over time.
Responsibilities
- Support fabrication and production operations throughout the shop
- Cross-train across multiple areas of the fabrication process
- Learn basic fabrication techniques, equipment, and shop procedures
- Accurately read and use a tape measure
- Assist experienced fabricators with shop work
- Perform material movement and handling throughout the facility
- Support cutting, drilling, grinding, torching, and general fabrication activities as training progresses
- Assist with layout, fit-up, and assembly work as skills develop
- Support welding-related work when appropriate based on experience and training
- Assist with painting and finishing fabricated components as needed
- Learn and operate various shop machines as appropriate
- Maintain clean and organized work areas
- Move between different shop functions based on production needs
- Remain productive when a primary machine or work area is idle
- Support another nearby facility when additional labor coverage is required
- Work safely around structural steel, cranes, machinery, and material-handling equipment
