Fabric Worker (Tailoring).

Custom tailor for the U.S. Army Cadet Command, producing and altering full-dress coats, long overcoats, parkas, and other precision-fitted garments.

Responsibilities

  • Construct and fit garments requiring close, accurate body measurements.
  • Read and interpret garment markings for alterations or repairs.
  • Repair garments by ripping out old stitching, cutting new material, lining, stiffening, hand and machine sewing, pressing, shaping, and marking for decorations.
  • Operate industrial sewing equipment to produce clothing and uniforms.
  • Work with a wide variety of fabrics and materials.

Requirements

  • Appointment subject to a Tier 1 background investigation and suitability determination.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and annual exams thereafter.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • One-year probationary period with limited appeal rights.

Experience includes paid and unpaid work, volunteer roles, and training through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps).

Screen-out element: Ability to perform tailoring work without more than normal supervision, including:

  • Modifying and repairing standard garments of moderate complexity.
  • Altering or repairing coats, jackets, and other tailored items requiring precise shaping and finishing.
  • Working with diverse fabrics and materials.

Additional job elements evaluated:

  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Measurement and layout skills.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).

Physical Effort

  • Stand at work tables to measure, mark, and trim materials.
  • Sit for extended periods while operating sewing machines or hand sewing.
  • Use arms, hands, and fingers for positioning materials, sewing, and using tools such as shears.
  • Handle heavy and bulky garments.
  • Lift and carry items up to 50 pounds unassisted; up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Use a hand iron weighing approximately 20 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated.
  • Exposure to minor injuries from sharp tools, allergies from dyes/dust/lint, and noise from sewing machines.
  • Conditions in the pressing room may include additional environmental factors.
