About the Role

Modifies, alters, and repairs clothing, with a focus on military uniforms. Responsible for the placement, arrangement, and handling of military ornamentation on various uniform articles. May also handle garments for laundering or dry cleaning.

Responsibilities

  • Makes alterations and repairs to uniform and civilian garments, including:
    • Pinning and basting
    • Trimming, lengthening, and shortening sleeves
    • Taking in and letting out waists of jackets
    • Replacing zippers
    • Lowering collars
    • Replacing pockets
    • Shortening and lengthening pants
    • Tapering skirts
    • Sewing on ratings and stripes
  • Takes customer body measurements to ensure proper garment fit.
  • Receives special orders from patrons for affixing medals, ribbons, badges, devices, and ratings. Selects appropriate insignia, measures placement, marks, trims, bastes, and presses upon completion. Mounts medals and sews items onto uniforms.
  • Operates a sewing machine and maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • Receives garments for laundering and dry cleaning from authorized patrons. Completes laundry/dry-cleaning tickets with name, social security number, date, and price. Stacks items into laundry bags for pickup.
  • Processes pick-up of cleaned articles by verifying ticket matches and collecting payment.
  • Operates a cash register, manages a cash fund, and prepares a Daily Salesperson’s Cash Report.
  • Requisitions and maintains adequate stock supplies.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and assists with inventory.
  • Provides courteous and prompt customer service, assisting patrons with inquiries in a friendly manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Effort

  • Frequently stands, stoops, bends, and kneels to measure and mark items for alteration.
  • Sits for extended periods while operating a sewing machine or hand-sewing.
  • Requires continual use of hands, arms, and fingers for sewing and using shears.
  • Subject to minor injuries such as punctures or scratches from needles, and minor irritations from treated materials.
  • Exposed to noise from sewing machines.

Requirements

General Experience

One year of experience that provided knowledge and skill to perform basic modifications, alterations, and repairs of clothing.

Substitution of Education for Experience

One year of high school education may substitute for 3 months of general experience, up to a High School Diploma or GED, which may substitute for one year of general experience.

Specialized Experience

One year of experience in using a sewing machine to perform alterations and repairs on garments, including tasks such as pinning, basting, trimming, adjusting sleeves, waists, zippers, collars, pockets, pants, and skirts, as well as sewing on ratings and stripes.

Schedule

Part-time (20 - 34.5 hours per week)
