About the Role

Oklahoma State University (OSU) Extension educators are the “front door” to the University, providing a link between OSU and the people of the state in all 77 Oklahoma counties. OSU Extension represents a federal, state, and county partnership working since 1914. The mission of OSU Extension is to disseminate information to the people of Oklahoma and encourage the adoption of research-generated knowledge. Extension educators provide research-based information to clientele in the areas of agriculture, family and consumer sciences, 4-H youth development, and community and rural development.

This position serves both Sequoyah and Muskogee County Extension Offices, and is housed in Sallisaw, OK. The role provides leadership to family and consumer sciences (FCS) and supports the 4-H youth development programs with approximately 75% of time spent in Sequoyah and 25% of time spent in Muskogee County. The position participates as a cohesive OSU Extension team member to involve local clientele and advisory groups in planning, implementing, and evaluating the total county program.

Due to communication expectations, the incumbent will be required to maintain a cellular or other electronic communication device. The salary includes compensation to apply toward the use of a personal cellular device. Extension educators comply with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, etc., related to equal opportunity, civil rights, and affirmative action. Extension educators are hired into the organization, not a specific geographic location; future circumstances may require relocation.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM with occasional evenings and weekends.

Pay

Base annual salary for entry-level educators with a bachelor’s degree is $45,000 and with a master’s degree is $51,000. Starting salary is based on education and prior relevant work experience. Continuation of employment is contingent upon need, performance, and available county funding.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to family and consumer sciences (FCS) and support 4-H youth development programs.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs in collaboration with local clientele and advisory groups.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clientele, advisory groups, Oklahoma Home & Community Education (OHCE) members, and other professionals.
  • Design, promote, present, and evaluate educational programs, ensuring they reach diverse audiences.
  • Maintain effective communication using computing and computer-based technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, public health, or a similar health-related field (required).
  • For candidates without a degree in FCS, must obtain the following certifications within two years of employment (expenses not covered by employer):
    • No FCS or Education Degree: Take two approved education courses (Pedagogy & Classroom Management) and pass APK and FCS OSAT.
    • No FCS Degree, but an Education Degree: Provide proof of passing PPAT or APK.
    • No FCS Degree, but Alternatively Certified in FCS and three years teaching: No special requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel connected with official duties (reimbursement provided).
  • Degree must be conferred on or before the agreed-upon start date.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, public health, or a similar health-related field.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Previous experience in Cooperative Extension or closely related work is desirable.
  • Extension educators hired with only a bachelor’s degree are encouraged to work toward completion of an approved master’s degree.
