Responsibilities
- Provide differentiated, multi-modal instruction aligned with the North Carolina Extended Content Standards across all core academic areas, including math, reading, science, and social studies, to address diverse cognitive and adaptive student needs.
- Implement diverse instructional strategies and supports, including accommodations and modifications, while adapting and creating materials to ensure meaningful access to learning for all students.
- Mentor and guide assistant teachers through modeling strategies, assigning students and tasks, delegating responsibilities, and providing instructional resources to strengthen classroom management, lesson planning, and overall instructional effectiveness.
- Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and district special education requirements by developing, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with extended content standards and driven by current and relevant student data.
- Utilize ongoing assessment and data collection to monitor and document student progress, adapting instruction to maximize individual student achievement.
- Partner with multidisciplinary school level team members, including related service providers, to coordinate and deliver appropriate supports that enable students to fully access and participate in the school environment.
- Foster positive relationships with families and stakeholders through effective communication, supporting active family participation and collaboration in student learning and development.
- Observe and monitor student behavior, implement proactive classroom management strategies, de-escalate challenging behaviors, and instruct students in appropriate behavioral and social-emotional skills.
- Provide assistance and implement procedures to meet students' personal care, hygiene, and medical needs in a safe and respectful manner as required.
- Attend professional learning developments, trainings, meetings as required or needed to enhance improve craft.
- Carry out additional responsibilities as directed by school administration, EC department to support student learning and school operations.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Special Education or related field.
Current North Carolina teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education.
Experience working with students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.
Knowledge of the North Carolina Extended Content Standards and ability to align instruction with these standards.
Ability to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to manage classroom behavior effectively and provide appropriate behavioral and social-emotional instruction.
Ability to assist students with personal care, hygiene, and medical needs.
