About the Role

New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service is seeking an Extension Agriculture/4-H Agent to serve De Baca County. This position provides an opportunity to work directly with youth, agricultural producers, families, and community members through educational programming and outreach.

This is a non-tenure track position physically located in De Baca County, NM.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance to Extension education programs for adults and youth in 4-H and Youth Development, Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, and community/economic development.
  • Collaborate with youth-serving community organizations and agencies to advance Extension 4-H Youth Development programs.
  • Support annual County Fair efforts.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer adult and youth leaders.
  • Team with other Extension Agents, State Specialists, District Department Head, and Administrators in planning and implementing Extension programs.
  • Maintain a favorable public image and gain acceptance for Extension and New Mexico State University among county citizens.
  • Provide timely reports as required.
  • Travel countywide via personal vehicle to execute educational programming.
  • Promote CES programs within the district to meet LEADS 2025 Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity goals, prioritizing program expansion to non-traditional demographics.
  • Foster collaborations and participate in activities and research teams supporting the Center of Excellence in Food and Sustainable Agriculture (CESFAS).

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (in hand by hire date) required, with at least one degree in Agriculture or a related field.
  • Alternatively, may be underfilled as an Extension Associate I with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or a related field (cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher) and must complete a master’s degree within 5 years of hire to continue employment.
  • Must live in the county where employed and be willing to work odd hours as needed.
  • Personal auto required; reimbursed at IRS rates per mile.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications

Promotion to assistant professor rank will be based on performance and Dean’s approval.

Working Conditions

  • Work is normally performed indoors but may require travel and outdoor activities.
  • Light physical effort, including standing/walking for more than four hours per day and lifting objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, requiring basic safety precautions.
