Department: Cooperative Extension Service, Rio Arriba County, NM

About the role

This is a non-tenure track position located in Abiquiu, NM, serving Rio Arriba County. The 4-H Agent will provide leadership and guidance to Extension educational programs for adults and youth, including 4-H, special interest groups, and community organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance to Extension educational programs for adults and youth, including 4-H and youth, special interest groups, adult and youth leaders, and the public throughout the county.
  • Collaborate with youth-serving community organizations and agencies to further Extension 4-H Youth Development programs.
  • Support annual County Fair efforts.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer adult and youth leaders.
  • Team with other Extension Agents in the county and district, as well as State Specialists, District Department Head, and Administrators in planning and implementing total Extension programs.
  • Maintain a favorable public image and gain acceptance for Extension and New Mexico State University among county citizens.
  • Administratively responsible to the County Program Director and through them to the Northern District Department Head.
  • Provide timely reports as required.
  • Promote CES programs within the district to meet LEADS 2025 Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity goals, prioritizing program expansion to non-traditional demographics.
  • Foster collaborations and participate in activities and research teams supporting the Center of Excellence in Food and Sustainable Agriculture (CESFAS).
  • Travel countywide via personal vehicle to execute educational programming for stakeholders.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed to support the program.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (in hand by hire date) required. At least one degree must be in Agriculture or a related field.
  • Alternatively, may be underfilled as an Extension Associate I with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture or a related field (cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher) and must complete a master’s degree within 5 years of hire to continue employment.
  • Promotion to assistant professor rank will be based on performance and Dean’s approval.
  • Must live in the county where employed.
  • Personal auto required; reimbursed at IRS rate per mile.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Satisfactory experience in Extension or a related field demonstrating ability to work with adults and/or youth.

Working Conditions

  • Moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Light physical effort, with occasional lifting of objects up to 25 pounds or standing/walking for more than four hours per day.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, requiring basic safety precautions.
