About the role
The successful candidate will be involved in the inspection, testing, and troubleshooting of moderately complex electrical systems and associated apparatus. Work may be performed in low-, medium-, or high-voltage systems.
Responsibilities
- Operate test instruments, support protection and controls testing, and gain experience in the fundamentals of electrical system components and overall structure.
- Work under limited supervision, independently executing moderately complex assignments, and contributing to regulatory compliance, safety adherence, and data integrity across active job sites.
- Provide day-to-day support to field teams, help resolve challenges on-site, and mentor junior technicians to promote quality, efficiency, and safe work practices.
- Support the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects, escalate complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager, and participate in daily safety briefings.
- Communicate progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team, review the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, and provide informal guidance as needed.
- Maintain attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries, collaborate with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards, assist in monitoring subcontractor performance and activities, and report observations to field leadership.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing
- Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes
- Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays
- Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards
- Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review
- Ability to identify routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions
- Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports
- Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies
- Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline
- Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays
- Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers
- Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
