About the role

The successful candidate will be involved in the inspection, testing, and troubleshooting of moderately complex electrical systems and associated apparatus. Work may be performed in low-, medium-, or high-voltage systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operate test instruments and support protection and controls testing
  • Gain experience in the fundamentals of electrical system components and overall structure
  • Support the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects
  • Escalate complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager
  • Review the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, providing informal guidance as needed
  • Maintain attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries
  • Collaborate with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards
  • Absorb and respond to routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions
  • Support subcontractor performance and activities and report observations to field leadership
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing
  • Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes
  • Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards
  • Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review
  • Ability to identify routine field challenges and equipment issues, responding within established procedures and escalating atypical conditions
  • Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports
  • Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions
  • Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers
  • Commitment to continued learning and development in technical field services
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical behavior in technical environments
  • Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Reliable, punctual, with the ability to work independently or with a team
  • Willingness and physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds individually, and up to 100 pounds with assistance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relays
  • Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers
  • Current OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification

Skills

  • Technical skills related to protective relays including relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings
  • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration
  • Capable of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results
  • Ability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments
  • Capability to follow procedures, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability in the field
  • Commitment to continued learning and development in technical field services

Fieldwork is located throughout the region, and the position is based in Florida or the Carolinas.
