Position Summary
Expanded Duty Dental assistants perform a variety of duties in a dental clinic setting. Their primary tasks include performing routine prophylaxis (cleanings), scaling, and chair-side assistance with the dentist and dental hygienist. They operate the suction hose, prepare patients for examinations, operate X-ray machines, make impressions, sterilize instruments, develop X-rays, and mix compounds for cleaning or filling teeth. Dental assistants also maintain the clinic space, schedule appointments, keep records, receive payments, and order supplies. They locate patient medical records and assist with patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED certificate
- Certificate from an accredited school for dental assisting with the Expanded Duty qualification
- Current Certificate for taking radiographs
- Current CPR (BLS)
- One year experience as a dental assistant
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to attend to multiple tasks at the same time and prioritize assignments to ensure compliance with deadlines and protocols
- Ability to work well in stressful situations
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Stands, sits, walks, and converses most of the day
- Exerts up to 20 pounds of force frequently including pushing, pulling, and /or reaching for objects
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation, and other conditions common to a clinical environment
