Executive Underwriter OR AVP Underwriting Director, Environmental Casualty
About the role
Zurich is seeking an experienced Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriter Director – Environmental Casualty Underwriter to join the Specialties Environmental underwriting team. This role may be based in any Zurich office within the Western region, with remote candidates considered at the hiring manager’s discretion. The position will be filled at either the Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriter Director level, determined by the selected applicant’s experience and qualifications.
You will handle complex new and renewal domestic Environmental Casualty accounts and serve as a Subject Matter Expert on the team. This role focuses on building relationships with select brokers in the South U.S. while applying and honing underwriting and marketing skills.
Responsibilities
- Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating annual rules.
- Develop, maintain, and collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other business-related needs.
- Provide guidance to lower-level associates as needed.
- Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) to support business retention and acquisition.
- Work with customers and distributors to determine their insurance-related needs and provide solutions.
- Support the sales culture by serving as a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers.
- Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
- Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
- Qualify accounts to meet the organization’s appetite while balancing sound business opportunities.
- Make broker/customer and on-site calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications, Executive Underwriter Level:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or a Market-Facing role, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support, or
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice (including an Associate Degree) and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting or a Market-Facing role, or
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice (including an Associate Degree) and 8+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Experience working under time constraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
- Experience working in a team environment.
Basic Qualifications, AVP, Underwriting Director Level:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or a Market-Facing role, or
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support, or
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice (including an Associate Degree) and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or a Market-Facing role, or
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice (including an Associate Degree) and 12+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Technical knowledge of Environmental Casualty Underwriting.
- Established broker relationships in the Western region (retail brokers).
- Sales execution mindset.
- Creative problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Pay
Your pay at Zurich is based on your role, location, skills, and experience. The combined salary range for this position is $100,000–$215,000. The proposed salary range for the Executive Underwriter is $100,000–$165,000, with a Global Specialty Incentive Plan bonus eligibility set at 30%. The proposed salary range for the AVP, Underwriting Director is $130,000–$215,000, with a Global Specialty Incentive Plan bonus eligibility set at 40%.
