Executive Director of Philanthropy
Job Description
This position provides strategic leadership for Sansum Clinic’s philanthropy program, focusing on individual donor cultivation and solicitation, comprehensive campaign strategy, and development operations aligned with Sutter Health’s goals. The role aims to secure $3M–$5M+ in annual philanthropic support.
Job Accountabilities
Leadership / Strategic Relationships:
- Provides visionary leadership advancing the organization’s philanthropic mission.
- Works with leaders to recruit and train trustees for effective governance and volunteer fundraising.
- Builds and maintains momentum and focus for fundraising efforts.
- Collaborates with senior leadership, philanthropic boards, and community leaders to raise gifts aligned with organizational priorities and donor wishes.
- Identifies and implements strategies to interest, engage, and secure various gift opportunities.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with key personnel, fostering trust, respect, and rapport.
Staff Management:
- Ensures proper hiring, training, support, and professional development of staff.
- Fosters a positive and efficient work environment that values professional development and teamwork.
- Establishes accountability standards and systems to track effectiveness and impact.
- Evaluates staff annually and provides necessary actions to ensure effective outcomes.
Philanthropy Program / Operations:
- Oversees annual budget, planning, and fiscal management.
- Develops and implements philanthropy program goals, objectives, and strategies.
- Aligns philanthropy’s messages with clinicians, volunteers, and staff.
- Maintains a comprehensive internal and external communications program for philanthropy.
- Serves as lead staff for the board of trustees or philanthropy committee.
- Ensures alignment of philanthropy activities with all Sutter Health philanthropy.
Fundraising / Prospect Management:
- Serves as the lead fundraiser, managing a portfolio of high-end donors.
- Coordinates major and planned gift officers for philanthropy.
- Collaborates with leadership, area leaders, and gift officers for fundraising advancement.
- Develops funding priorities and case materials for fundraising.
- Tracks activity and productivity of major and planned gifts.
- Manages referrals of new prospects to appropriate fundraising staff.
- Ensures appropriate acknowledgment, stewardship, and cultivation of prospects and donors.
- Uses external counsel for program audits and campaigns when necessary.
Education & Experience
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
Bachelor's degree
Typical experience: 15 years recent relevant experience
Skills & Knowledge
Exemplary leadership, management skills with the ability to motivate and mentor individuals in a changing environment while increasing performance.
Comprehensive knowledge of all fundraising approaches, with special expertise in capital campaigns, principal and major gifts, and planned giving.

Demonstrated ability to maintain positive, collaborative, productive relationships with diverse key stakeholders across the organization.
