About the role
The Executive Director of Development is the chief fundraising officer and a key member of the leadership team for the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CSHTM). This executive will provide visionary strategic and operational leadership to build and grow a comprehensive advancement program. The Executive Director is charged with designing and executing innovative fundraising strategies to support the school's ambitious mission, vision, and campaign goals.
Responsibilities
- Develops and directs the strategic plan for fund-raising, stewardship, board management and alumni relations for the CSHTM.
- Affirms funding needs, develops, and communicates a case for support.
- Develops, plans and implements strategies to secure philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations in support of the School's campaign and fund-raising priorities.
- Manages all fund-raising activities as well as initiates, plans and coordinates the development of donor cultivation, proposals, solicitations and stewardship.
- Proactively manages a personal portfolio of up to 180 potential donors, prospects or suspects.
- Develops and executes the school's portion of the University campaign.
- Provides professional fundraising guidance to the Dean and other academic and administrative leaders in defining external and community relations, career services, stewardship, special events, fund-raising and alumni relations priorities.
- Travels nationally and internationally to cultivate and solicit prospects.
- Serves as a key member of the University Advancement team.
- Recruits, manages, supervises, motivates, trains, and retains experienced and competent professional and support staff in collaboration with University administrators.
- Develops and effectively administers departmental operating budget.
- Works with the FIU Alumni Association, President's Council, Board of Trustees, FIU Foundation Board of Directors and other University stakeholders to promote support for the School and to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet established goals and objectives.
- Reports regularly to the Assistant Vice President. Produces and evaluates reports related to fundraising and development program activity and production.
- Communicates effectively with the Advancement staff. Collaborates with other University Advancement team members to inspire trust, encourage creative thinking, and collaborate with other FIU staff and volunteers to significantly increase gifts to FIU.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and twelve (12) years of experience with seven (7) years of experience in fundraising. Supervises/ manages subordinate staff.
- Degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, Hospitality Management, or a related field.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in development, with a proven track record of soliciting and closing six- and seven-figure major and principal gifts.
- Demonstrated experience in planning and executing comprehensive fundraising campaigns within a complex organization is strongly preferred.
- Direct experience within or a deep understanding of the global hospitality and tourism industry is a significant asset.
- A history of significant achievement in a broad-based development role, with documented success in leading teams and managing multifaceted programs, ideally within a higher education setting.
