Executive Director, Clinical Applications
Position Summary
The Executive Director of Clinical Applications is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and optimization of BMCHS’s clinical information systems – namely Epic - and associated ancillary clinical applications. This role will lead multiple teams across ambulatory, inpatient and reporting applications to ensure that clinical technology enhances patient safety, improves clinician workflow, and aligns with broader organizational goals. The successful candidate will be a key member of the BMC IT leadership team, will build and support high performing teams, and will be looked upon as the foremost expert on the use of technology in the hospital EHR and reporting spaces. The Executive Director of Clinical Applications will partner with hospital clinical and operational leadership to ensure roadmaps are aligned and that technology and innovative address the needs of our three-hospital system.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Develop and execute a multi-year roadmap for clinical applications that supports the organization’s clinical, operational, financial objectives
Partner with leaders within and outside the system to align strategic goals with technology capabilities
Foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement in EHR solutions
System Optimization
Oversee the lifecycle of Epic and integrated clinical systems, ensuring high availability and continuous improvement
Lead the evaluation and rollout of new Epic modules, optimizations, and the adoption of quarterly upgrades
Conduct research to understand market trends, evolving needs, and/or unsolved customer pain points
Stakeholder Engagement
Act as the primary liaison between IT, clinical leadership (CMIO, CNIO) and operations & administrative leads to prioritize requests and resolve pain points
Serve as an executive sponsor ensuring client satisfaction and application usage
Build and maintain strategic relationships across clinical, operational, and IT stakeholders to align enterprise technology initiatives with organizational priorities
Resource Optimization & Talent Development
Direct a distributed team of Epic Analysts, Managers, and Directors ensuring talent is allocated effectively across high-priority enterprise projects
Develop standardized tools and processes to ensure consistent development, implementation, and integration across BMCHS IT environments
Design new workflows, policies, and training programs in alignment with systemwide best practices
Mentor and manage team, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability
Governance & Compliance
Facilitate the Clinical IT Governance Committee to manage the intake of project and enhancement requests, ensuring clinical build remains standardized and scalable
Establish KPIs and metrics to monitor usage and performance. Implement course-corrections when performance deviates from goals
Financial Management
Manage the capital and operating budgets for the clinical applications department, including vendor contract negotiations and ROI analysis
Job Requirements
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in information technology, business or a related field (master’s preferred)
10+ years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare and technology. Health System or Hospital network experience highly preferred
Deep experience managing teams across multiple EPIC modules
Proven experience managing applications for a multi-hospital or academic medical system
Demonstrated track record of building relationships with executive-level internal and customer stakeholders
Proven ability to navigate a highly complex, matrixed environment
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience managing "Best-of-Breed" technical integrations into Epic workflows
Knowledge of technology and data operations, solution delivery models, and finance
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Hold at least one active Epic Certification (e.g., EpicCare Inpatient, Ambulatory, or Willow)
Current on New Version Training (NVT)
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS PREFERRED:
Multiple Epic certifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):
Deep understanding of clinical and operational workflows in community and practice-based settings
Lifecycle Mastery: Experience leading at least one Full Life-Cycle Epic Implementation or a major multi-site "Big Bang" upgrade
Governance Knowledge: Deep familiarity with Epic-specific tools and programs, including Honor Roll/Stars requirements, Nova release notes, and System Pulse
Strong interpersonal, client-facing, and presentation skills
Ability to manage competing priorities, with a customer-centric mindset and consultative approach
Familiarity with interoperability standards, health data exchange, and cybersecurity best practices
