About the role

The AAFP is seeking an Executive Director, AAFP Foundation & Vice President Development to provide executive leadership and overall management of the AAFP Foundation, the 501(c)(3) philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians. This role sets and executes the AAFP Foundation’s strategic, fundraising, and stewardship direction across individual, corporate, and planned-giving sources and oversees the Foundation’s signature humanitarian, educational, and scientific programs. The position leads the AAFP’s engagement with private, family, and corporate foundations to secure grant funding for Academy strategic priorities.

This position reports to the AAFP Executive Vice President/CEO with primary accountability to the AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees. The individual serves as Secretary of the AAFP Board of Trustees and provides day-to-day leadership, management, and administration of the AAFP Foundation. The individual also serves on the AAFP Insurance Services Board. The Foundation manages an annual operating budget of approximately $4M and a total asset base exceeding $30M, generated through investment returns, subsidiary earnings, corporate support, individual giving, and grants. This role manages a team of nine employees. Residency within the Kansas City metropolitan area is required.

  • Monday-Friday (hybrid)
  • Additional hours as needed
  • Travel: 20-30 days per year

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership and overall management of the AAFP Foundation.
  • Set and execute the Foundation’s strategic, fundraising, and stewardship direction across individual, corporate, and planned-giving sources.
  • Oversee the Foundation’s signature humanitarian, educational, and scientific programs.
  • Lead engagement with private, family, and corporate foundations to secure grant funding for Academy strategic priorities.
  • Serve as Secretary of the AAFP Board of Trustees and provide day-to-day leadership, management, and administration of the AAFP Foundation.
  • Serve on the AAFP Insurance Services Board.
  • Manage a team of nine employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, finance, communication, or a related field (preferred).
  • 5-10 years of executive leadership experience within a nonprofit, healthcare, association, foundation, or mission-driven organization.
  • Proven success in fundraising, donor development, grant acquisition, and relationship management.
  • Demonstrated experience working with governing boards and volunteer leadership.
  • Strong financial management, strategic planning, and organizational leadership skills.
  • Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and executive presence.
  • Commitment to ethical fundraising and mission-driven leadership.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field (preferred).
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) credential (preferred).
  • Experience with major gifts, planned giving, corporate partnerships, and foundation grantmaking.
  • Background in healthcare, medical associations, philanthropy, or educational nonprofits.
  • Experience overseeing large-scale fundraising and stewardship programs.
