Exec Director - Underwriting, Analysis and Strategy
Job Summary
The Executive Director, Underwriting & Pricing Strategy is a critical leadership role responsible for driving underwriting strategy, risk assessment, pricing support, and client-facing financial partnerships that support the organization's growth and profitability objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and execution of underwriting strategies that support organizational growth, profitability, membership, and financial performance objectives.
Serve as a senior strategic partner to a major healthcare client, building trusted relationships and collaborating closely with client underwriting and pricing counterparts.
Guide the assessment, evaluation, and management of risk while ensuring underwriting decisions align with established financial and operational goals.
Develop and implement underwriting methodologies, governance frameworks, policies, and processes that drive consistency, compliance, and operational excellence.
Partner with pricing strategy, finance, and business leaders to develop competitive solutions, pricing constructs, and customized approaches that address evolving market needs.
Provide leadership in the design and evaluation of new healthcare products, services, and offerings.
Monitor underwriting performance, profitability, loss ratio trends, and key operational metrics, identifying opportunities for improvement and recommending corrective actions.
Analyze competitive activity, market dynamics, and regulatory developments to inform underwriting and pricing strategies.
Help establish and evolve client engagement processes, operating models, and governance structures to strengthen strategic partnerships, improve business outcomes, and deliver contract compliance.
Lead, coach, and develop a team of underwriting professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Drive cross-functional collaboration across finance, underwriting, pricing, product, and client-facing teams to achieve business objectives.
Required Experience
Significant progressive leadership experience in healthcare underwriting, risk management, pricing, or related financial disciplines; PBM (Pharmacy Benefit Manager) experience strongly preferred.
Deep expertise in underwriting methodologies, risk assessment, profitability management, pricing strategy, and loss ratio performance.
Proven experience managing client relationships and serving as a strategic advisor to senior internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to balance customer needs with financial and underwriting discipline to achieve both growth and profitability objectives.
Experience developing and implementing underwriting policies, governance frameworks, and process improvements.
Strong commercial acumen with the ability to assess market opportunities, competitive positioning, and emerging industry trends.
Exceptional communication, influencing, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to think strategically while operating effectively in a highly collaborative environment.
Ability to innovate and solve complex business problems, and make sound decisions and recommendations in a fast-paced environment.
Experience supporting large national healthcare clients, payer organizations, PBMs, managed care organizations, or similar healthcare businesses is strongly preferred.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Actuarial Science, or a related field required; Advanced degree (MBA, MHA, or similar) preferred.
Relevant professional certifications, underwriting credentials, or specialized training are a plus.
Pay Range
The Typical Pay Range For This Role Is $131,500.00 - $303,195.00 This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
