About the role
We are seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to join our underground utility construction team. This position is focused on supporting pipe crews by safely and efficiently operating excavators for the installation of storm, sanitary sewer, and water utility systems.
Responsibilities
- Operate hydraulic excavators safely and efficiently on underground utility projects.
- Excavate trenches for storm, sanitary sewer, and water main installation.
- Work safely around existing utilities while maintaining proper trench dimensions and grades.
- Support pipe crews by placing bedding material, setting pipe, and maintaining safe excavation practices.
- Read and follow grade stakes, layout points, and direction from survey crews and foremen.
- Perform daily pre-operation inspections and complete equipment checklists.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and promptly report maintenance concerns.
- Operate equipment responsibly to maximize production while minimizing unnecessary wear.
- Follow Petticoat-Schmitt and OSHA safety standards at all times.
- Communicate effectively with foremen, pipe crews, and other equipment operators.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Support crew productivity while protecting fellow team members and underground infrastructure.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of excavator operating experience in heavy civil construction.
- Required experience working directly with underground utility pipe crews.
- Experience excavating for storm, sanitary sewer, and water utility installation.
- Ability to read grade stakes and follow construction layout.
- Strong understanding of trench safety and excavation best practices.
- Ability to work safely around underground utilities and personnel.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb in and out of heavy equipment repeatedly throughout the day.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely work around heavy construction equipment and active jobsites.
