About the role
The Evidence Intake Technician position is located in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section at the London, Ohio office. BCI is Ohio’s official crime lab, serving the criminal justice community and protecting Ohio families. It provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies at no cost, with offices statewide and 24/7 response capabilities. BCI staff include special agents, forensic scientists, and criminal intelligence analysts who support law enforcement through three main divisions: Identifications, Investigations, and Laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Process and preserve all evidence and property submissions (e.g., latent prints, blood, urine, drugs, weapons, hazardous/bio-hazardous materials) collected from crime scenes or hazardous situations, ensuring compliance with ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), Ohio Department of Health, internal control procedures, and laboratory best practices.
- Evaluate evidence receipt forms for completeness (e.g., suspect, officer, agency, chain of custody details) and report discrepancies to supervisors.
- Examine evidence submissions for proper sealing, packaging, and safety (e.g., no leaks, exposed needles) and repackage as needed.
- Document evidence and property intake activities using a laboratory information management system, including verifying entries, updating records, and maintaining evidence history.
- Review, verify, and validate requests for evidence destruction in accordance with internal procedures and state statutes, ensuring accurate records and paperwork.
- Act as a liaison with courts, prosecutor’s offices, and law enforcement agencies to respond to inquiries about evidence results, submissions, testing, procedures, and fees.
- Maintain the crime lab calendar (e.g., subpoenas, court assignments).
- Testify in court regarding evidence integrity, chain of custody, quality control audits, and related matters.
- Participate in special projects to improve laboratory evidence intake policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Formal education in arithmetic (calculating fractions, decimals, percentages) and proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- 12 months of experience in a forensic laboratory, biology/chemistry/medical office laboratory, law enforcement agency, or legal environment.
- 6 months of training or experience in inventory control (e.g., receiving, storing, and dispensing materials).
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may substitute for the above qualifications.
