About the role
Unruled Masses (UM) is a New York‑based 501(c)(3) nonprofit building public civic intelligence and direct‑action infrastructure for peaceful civic engagement. As an Events Manager volunteer, you will help launch and scale the Community Action Training Program, delivering free, credentialed briefings and civic training to groups of 20‑100 neighbors.
Responsibilities
- Identify Opportunities – scout and evaluate local venues (libraries, community centers, rented spaces) and virtual platforms for 60‑to‑75‑minute Community Action Training sessions.
- Collaborate on Strategy – work with other Event Manager volunteers to select neighborhoods and cities that align with the mission.
- Design & Plan – lead logistical design, ensuring venues have necessary AV equipment (projectors, sound) for Corruption Intelligence Briefs and Nonviolent Action Playbook teach‑ins.
- Coordinate Logistics – manage venue sourcing, coordinate with credentialed speakers (former intelligence officers, data scientists, professors), handle volunteer scheduling, and manage equipment transport.
- Execute & Oversee – help lead on‑site or virtual execution, ensuring smooth flow from doors‑open to concluding Q&A.
- Integrate Action – partner with intelligence and communications teams so attendees transition from learning about corruption to engaging with UM’s broader civic tools.
- Manage a range of activations including core Community Action Trainings (60‑75 min, 20‑100 attendees), micro‑events (cafe meetups, tables, volunteer onboarding), civic presence (UM blocks at marches/rallies), and major productions (town halls, summits, televised panels).
- Potential leadership paths – serve in regional/national roles, oversee high‑budget televised productions, develop standardized Event Kits, mentor junior coordinators.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in event planning, marketing, workshop coordination, or project management.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple moving parts simultaneously.
- A “roll up your sleeves” attitude – comfortable with high‑level strategy and physical setup/teardown (projectors, seating, signage).
- Excellent communication skills; ability to coordinate professionally with credentialed experts, venue hosts, and community members.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment while executing in the physical world.
- Experience in guerrilla marketing, grassroots mobilizing, or community education is a significant plus.
- Comfortable with unpredictability of live events and able to problem‑solve under pressure.
Benefits
- Join the founding team of a high‑impact, global movement and build a brand‑new civic education program.
- Build a professional portfolio of diverse event executions, from local grassroots workshops to large‑scale productions.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of analysts, researchers, and organizers.
- Directly facilitate the “real world” room where neighbors turn abstract awareness into organized, lawful action.
- Receive credit and visibility for your role in major public‑facing UM activations.
- Be part of a mission focused not just on exposing harm—but rebuilding agency, joy, and community.
Pay
This is an unpaid volunteer role. As funding allows, paid positions may be offered in the future.
Schedule
Flexible time commitment; asked for at least 2–5 hours per week for planning, with higher availability required during the lead‑up to and execution of specific events.
