The Role
As an Estate Planning Attorney, you will design and implement estate and wealth-transfer strategies for a sophisticated client base, draft the full range of estate planning instruments, and guide clients and fiduciaries through probate and trust administration. The role blends technical tax-driven planning with direct, ongoing client counsel.
Key Responsibilities
- Advising clients on estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax planning
- Drafting wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, ILITs, SLATs, GRATs, charitable trusts, powers of attorney, and related estate documents
- Counseling clients on asset titling and beneficiary designations
- Managing probate and trust administration matters
- Advising fiduciaries on trust administration and risk management
- Supporting business succession planning alongside corporate and real estate teams
- Cooking with CPAs, financial advisors, and valuation professionals
- Conducting legal research and managing matters independently
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Licensed in Illinois, or eligible for timely admission
- Minimum 5 years of Trusts & Estates experience
- Strong estate planning and probate administration background
- Knowledge of federal estate, gift, and GST tax principles
- Strong drafting, client communication, and organizational skills
- Able to independently manage client matters
Preferred Qualifications
- LL.M. in Taxation
- Experience with Form 706, Form 709, portability, and GST planning
- High-net-worth client experience
- Experience with closely held businesses and charitable planning
- Familiarity with the Illinois Probate Act and Cook County probate practice
- Experience with legal practice management and document automation software
