About the Project

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States—enough to power 1 million electric vehicles per year. As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team of contractors engineering and building the facility, as well as managing procurement of about $1 billion in goods and services.

Earthwork began in 2023, and design and procurement of long-lead equipment is underway. The project is located in the high desert of north-central Nevada, about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada, and 3 hours northeast of Reno. Planned with sustainability and the environment in mind, the facility will use its excess process heat to generate electricity and will recycle process water up to seven times. Once the second phase is complete, Thacker Pass will produce more than 16 times the current U.S. output of lithium.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight of the project’s Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) compliance activities through inspection of project field execution activities.
• Assist project and construction management in implementing and complying with project safety requirements and addressing ES&H issues as they arise during project execution.
• Work directly with other project-level functions (e.g., engineering, construction, subcontracts, procurement, project controls, document controls) to assist them in addressing applicable ES&H requirements in their work activities.
• Conduct daily site surveillance to verify adequate use of PPE, routine equipment inspections, and project ES&H initiatives.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures necessary for the safety and health of employees and protection of the environment and communities.
• Maintain ES&H databases, including incident events, audit/assessment findings, and corrective actions.
• Perform statistical analysis of ES&H data to identify performance trends and contributing factors as part of continuous improvement.
• Identify and support unique software systems and electronic innovation used by ES&H personnel.
• Lead teams in conducting risk assessments, studies, mitigation planning, and monitoring in response to ES&H issues.
• Prepare communications, write reports, and prepare documents for program execution and records retention.
• Assist with incident notifications, lead investigations, and prepare incident investigation reports.
• Recommend and implement improvements in processes, procedures, and work activities to minimize hazard potential.
• Participate in and may lead employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs.
• Research moderately complex issues and provide regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
• Provide support to ES&H field and office personnel across all ES&H disciplines.
• Conduct Project Contractor Orientation.
• Lead and implement Project ESH Audits, monitoring completion of specified corrective actions.
• Coach Contractor Project and Safety Team on Bechtel Processes and expectations.

Requirements

• Knowledge of OSHA 1926 and 1910.
• Understanding of Bechtel's ESH Core Processes (preferred).
• Ability to perform root cause analysis for incident investigations.
• Experience in ES&H assessments/inspections during construction.
• Experience in managing and/or providing technical oversight of ES&H subcontractors or consultants.
• Knowledge of safety programs/engineering systems, principles, and methodologies.
• Knowledge of national safety laws/regulations, regulatory agencies’ requirements, industry standards, and best management practices for minimizing ES&H risks during project execution.

Pay

Salary range: $91,000–$138,800 annually (based on market data; final salary offered is determined by education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant).
