About the role
The ER Registrar manages patient intake and registration processes in the Emergency Department, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of patient records while delivering high-quality customer service to patients and their families. This role supports efficient department operations through accurate documentation, insurance verification, and communication across clinical and administrative teams.
Responsibilities
- Greets patients and families in a professional and compassionate manner, ensuring a positive first impression.
- Registers patients for emergency services, obtaining all required personal, insurance, and medical information.
- Verifies patient identification and insurance details, updating patient records as needed.
- Obtains patient or family signatures on necessary consent authorization forms, explaining each consent prior to signing.
- Verifies insurance coverage and eligibility, ensuring all necessary information is captured for billing purposes.
- Collects patient co-pays or deductibles when applicable and informs patients of financial obligations.
- Assists patients with understanding insurance requirements and resolves insurance-related questions.
- Documents reasons if a patient or family member signs consent forms on behalf of the patient, including nursing sign-off when required.
- Verifies insurance and identifies proper insurance plan codes to ensure accurate and prompt payment.
- Compiles necessary paperwork for quick retrieval and processing of patient visits.
- Places an armband on each patient before they leave the department to ensure proper identification.
- Notifies physicians or departments of patient arrivals and follows up if patients wait extended periods.
- Maintains communication with key personnel during emergency codes and alerts the facility when emergency plans are in place.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Requirements
- Post-secondary education or training in medical office administration or healthcare administration preferred.
- 0-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting, including patient registration, medical office scheduling, or front desk/admissions required.
- 0-2 years of customer service experience preferred.
Skills
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Knowledge of insurance verification and basic medical terminology.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and registration software.
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
- Effective interpersonal skills to work with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or emergency situations.
