About the role

The Transmission Equipment Operator is an entry-level position responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position involves working at various locations and may require occasional travel to another state based on customer demands.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.
  • String overhead wire.
  • Set poles and anchors.
  • Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switchgear.
  • Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
  • Frequently work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Able to understand and operate company radio.
  • Able to operate heavy equipment.
  • Able to understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
  • Able to understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Able to receive and follow directions.
  • Able to learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Familiar with induced voltage.
  • Able to assist with the installation and hook-up of a single-phase transformer.
  • Able to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Able to understand the basic concepts of equipment setup and grounding.
  • Able to install and remove a service.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to identify different types of materials used in line work.
  • Able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to work over-time when requested.
  • Able to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of experience.
  • Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
  • Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Able to work over-time when requested.
  • Able to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Qualifications

  • Must be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Able to check voltage on transformers.
  • Able to understand flag and tag procedures.
  • Able to install and remove a service.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Able to identify different types of materials used in line work.
  • Able to work at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Able to understand minimum approach distance.
  • Able to understand the basic concepts of equipment setup and grounding.
  • Able to make up and use a hand line.
  • Able to understand how and when to use Kellum grips.
  • Able to identify different types of materials used in line work.
  • Able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Able to work over-time when requested.
  • Able to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
