Equipment Operator - Transmission

About the role

The Transmission Equipment Operator is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position requires frequent travel to various locations and may involve working at heights and in inclement weather.

Responsibilities

• Stringing overhead wire.
• Setting poles and anchors.
• Installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switchgear.
• Replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits and systems.
• Maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
• Performing rigorous physical labor.
• Understanding proper use of company radio and heavy equipment.
• Understanding basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
• Using hand tools and understanding their proper use and maintenance.
• Identifying primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
• Understanding induced voltage and flag and tag procedures.
• Installing and removing a service.
• Inspecting rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Using Kellum grips and making hand lines.
• Identifying different types of materials used in line work.
• Working outside, frequently in inclement weather.
• Willing to work over-time and outside of the normal work schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Requirements

• 1-2 years of experience.
• Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
• Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
• A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
• Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
• Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
• Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
• Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
• Willing to work over-time when requested.
• Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Skills

• Basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
• Ability to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
• Familiarity with induced voltage.
• Ability to assist with the installation and hook up of a single phase transformer.
• Ability to perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
• Understanding of equipment setup and grounding.
• Ability to check voltage on transformers.
• Understanding of minimum approach distance.
• Ability to install and remove a service.
• Ability to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
• Ability to make up and use a hand line.
• Understanding of how and when to use Kellum grips.
• Ability to identify different types of materials used in line work.
• Ability to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
• Willingness to work over-time and outside of the normal work schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.
