Equipment Operator - Transmission

Position Summary

The Transmission Equipment Operator is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations. The position may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.

About the Role

This position requires a combination of manual labor, technical skills, and safety awareness. The operator will work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead work.

Responsibilities

• Stringing overhead wire.
• Setting poles and anchors.
• Installing transformers, lightening arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches and switchgear.
• Assisting with replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits and systems.
• Maintain company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
• Frequent work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
• Maintain a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
• Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
• Understand basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
• Understand the proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
• Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
• Understand the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
• Install and remove a service.
• Properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
• Understand when to wear personnel protective equipment.
• Make up and use a hand line.
• Understand how and when to use Kellum grips.
• Identify different types of materials used in line work.
• Work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
• Willingness to glove/work high voltage transmission lines.

Requirements

• 1-2 years of experience.
• Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
• Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
• A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
• Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
• Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
• Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
• Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
• Willing to work over-time when requested.
• Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required for the position.

Physical Demands

• Frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.
• Exposure to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites.
• Noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
• Position is performed in outside weather conditions.
