About the role
The City of Fayetteville is seeking Equipment Operator II's to join the Public Services Department. This role involves operating light and medium power-driven equipment, including refuse trucks, yard waste trucks, dump trucks, tractor mowers, street sweepers, snow plows, salt spreaders, crane trucks, etc., to assist with municipal solid waste collection, recycling materials handling, and street maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain light and medium-sized equipment and other ancillary equipment in support of municipal solid waste collection and street maintenance.
- Participate in all required training classes and adhere to safety rules and procedures.
- Assist with the repair and maintenance of city-owned properties such as parks, cemeteries, streets, and rights-of-way.
- Transport and deliver equipment from various locations as required.
- Collect, haul, and dispose of municipal solid waste and yard debris at appropriate facilities.
- Perform additional tasks such as loading carts, repairing carts, using shovels, rakes, brooms, etc., while removing debris from the street or curb line.
- Engage in grounds maintenance, construction, and maintenance tasks like mowing, clearing fence lines, grading, seeding, concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jackhammering, and minor repair activities.
- Maintain records and logs of all work performed, conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and perform basic preventive maintenance on equipment as required.
- Install street barricades and cones prior to work; direct and control traffic around work sites.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and others through various communication technologies, including radios, digital phones, and on-board communication devices.
- Respond to emergencies, weather events, and public inquiries in a courteous manner; investigate and respond to complaints from the public; resolve issues in the area of assignment.
Requirements
- Experience: Two years of experience involving the skilled operation of refuse equipment or medium construction and maintenance equipment in parks, cemeteries, horticultural environments, street repair/maintenance, or related fields.
- Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
- Licenses/Certifications: Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license; possession of or the ability to obtain a class B CDL within six months of hire, and ability to maintain insurability.
- Preferred: Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire date, CPR certification, Forklift certification, Defensive Driving course completion, FEMA Training Certification, First Aid certification, Trenching & Excavation certification, Confined Space Entry certification, NCDOL 10-hour Occupational Safety General Industry certification, Work Zone Safety certification, and Flagger certification.
Qualifications
- Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- Ability to meet the driving requirements, including obtaining a Class B or Class A CDL within six months of hire, and maintaining insurability.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including on-call 24/7, and to work in various weather and environmental conditions.
