Equipment Operator-Heavy

About the Role

Operate various types of heavy equipment, including but not limited to front end loaders (4CY or greater), motor grader, excavator (20 ton class or larger), dozer, scraper, tractor-pan, trackhoe, skid pan, PD-10, trencher, and applicable light and medium equipment. Perform construction tasks such as land clearing, common/mass excavation, pond/reservoir excavation, rough grade/finish grade roadway, and underground utility work for heavy civil, industrial, and wind projects.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate heavy equipment, demonstrating knowledge of equipment functions, running, navigating, detecting or assessing problems, mechanical aptitude, and driving.
  • Build level and/or extreme terrain and excavate land surfaces using various pieces of construction equipment.
  • Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, rocks, and to distribute and level earth or terrain.
  • Gather and load dirt, stone, equipment, materials, and waste products from the jobsite onto trucks using different pieces of equipment.
  • Excavate trenches with proper slopes per OSHA standards.
  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
  • Communicate clearly, listen, and understand information through spoken words and sentences to ensure comprehension of job duties, safety regulations, and other critical situations.
  • Perform maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, and oiling machines; fill out maintenance reports daily.
  • Travel to different jobsites on limited notice as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Superintendent or Foreman.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years or more of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety, working toward Wanzek’s Zero Injury principles.
  • Flexible work schedule; nights and/or weekends may be required.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, engineering drawings, and procedure manuals.
  • Perform arithmetic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Knowledge and operation of various GPS systems.
  • Common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Work within precise standards of accuracy; judge distances and slopes accurately; make decisions based on verifiable standards.
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in structural fills, DOT, and other public and private entities.

Working Environment

  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, and extreme heat.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Pay

$28.00 - $31.50 per hour, commensurate with experience.
