Heavy Equipment Operator
About the role
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of specialized heavy automotive equipment used in highway maintenance or construction projects. This role requires greater skill and responsibility for the safety of others compared to other types of equipment operation.
Responsibilities
- Operation of equipment covered under MEO including Bobcat/skid steer, dozer, grader, roller/compactors, tractor trailers, snow loader, conveyors, street sealing equipment, belt loaders, snow-go crane, backhoe, front-end loaders, Paver.
- Performs a variety of minor repairs on motor equipment and services small pumps.
- Provides oversight and training for all phases of City of Binghamton Heavy and Motor Equipment Operator training.
- Travels to jobsites to deliver training and evaluate heavy and motor equipment operators' performance.
Requirements
- 10+ years of heavy equipment operating experience on various types of heavy and motor equipment (i.e. Dozers, Front-End Loaders, Trailers, Trucks, Motor Equipment, Sweepers, Graders, Wing and Plow Trucks etc.).
- Experience in developing, administering, and leading heavy and motor equipment operator training programs.
- CDL Class A License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and maintained during the entire length of appointment.
Qualifications
Good knowledge of the operation of heavy equipment and Tractor/trailers; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to make simple repairs to the equipment; ability to supervise a small work crew; mechanical aptitude; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; Ability to make decisions on the spot when necessary and those that will have an effect on the outcome of the project.
