About the role

The City of Visalia Public Works Department is recruiting for Equipment Mechanic/Senior Equipment Mechanic depending on qualifications (DOQ).

Responsibilities

  • Perform a group of related duties according to established procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair complex problems on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Work in different areas of the fleet operation such as light or heavy shop, tire shop or lube bay.

Requirements

  • Self-starter, team player with effective communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to work with other staff members, follow safe work practices, and adhere to City policies.
  • Valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake endorsement.

Qualifications

  • Equipment Mechanic: 2 years of experience in maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.
  • Sr. Equipment Mechanic: 4 years of experience in maintenance and repair of gas, diesel, and compressed natural gas powered equipment.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake endorsement by time of appointment.

Compensation

  • Salary range stated on the job announcement.
  • Salary increases based on employee work performance, up to a maximum of 5% per fiscal year.
  • Longevity Pay based on years of service.
  • Bilingual pay of $900 per year, pro-rated on a pay period basis.
  • Communications Training Pay of $1,000 per year, prorated and paid bi-weekly.

  • Holidays: 11 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.
  • Vacation: 10 days per year, increasing after 2, 4, 9, and 16 years of service.
  • Sick Leave: 96 hours per year, accruing per pay period.
  • Compensatory Time Off: 8 hours per calendar year for FLSA non-exempt employees.
  • Health Insurance: Medical, dental, and vision care with employee and employer contributions.
  • Life Insurance: Premium paid by the City for a $30,000 policy and an option for a supplemental policy.
  • Retirement: Covered under the 2% @ 62 plan with CalPERS contributions.
  • Section 125: Voluntary Section 125 program for tax-free contributions.
  • Long Term Disability: Eligible for disability insurance (up to 2/3 of salary).
