About the role
The Equipment Mechanic I, II, and III positions provide maintenance and repair services for various types of heavy and light mechanical equipment, parts, and components. These roles require a combination of technical skills and physical labor.
Responsibilities
- Performs minor overhauls, front-end alignments, and minor vehicle component repairs and maintenance.
- Rebuilds minor vehicle components.
- Uses diagnostic equipment and equipment manuals to correctly diagnose vehicles.
- Repairs electrical and air conditioning systems.
- Performs State of Texas vehicle inspections.
- Diagnoses and repairs electrical systems on vehicular equipment.
- Prepares new vehicles and equipment to be placed into service.
- Keeps track of repair times, materials and records in the FASTER fleet management System.
- Performs road tests on vehicles and equipment for safe and proper operation prior to returning to service.
- Cleans and maintains equipment and shop tools.
- Performs housekeeping duties. Must furnish own hand tools.
- Responds to service calls as needed; makes repairs in the field when possible; and tows vehicles when necessary.
- Aids other technicians in performing repairs.
- May modify, fabricate and install special equipment.
- Researches and stays current on new technologies.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Technical Training: Completion of up to 18 months of vocational education/training in automotive, Med/Heavy Truck maintenance or repair at an accredited trade school.
- Three years of automotive/truck/equipment maintenance and repair experience, or graduation from an accredited automotive/truck trade school of at-least 18 months.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and obtain a Class A commercial driver's license within 6 Months of employment start date and comply with the City of Mesquite’s policy on driving.
- Must obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety/Emissions Inspection Certification within 6 months of hire.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have an associate’s degree from an accredited college, and/or valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); Technicians having ASE Master Certification on Automotive or Medium/Heavy Trucks and familiar with computerized fleet management programs.

- Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions.
