Equine Care Specialist

About the role

Care for, feed, monitor and perform minor treatment on equine & livestock animals. Assist veterinarians and farriers with routine and specialized procedures. Maintain facilities, equipment, and vehicles, and process adoption applications.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine equine and livestock husbandry: cleaning hooves, brushing/bathing coats, deworming.
• Assist veterinarians with procedures such as teeth floats, castrations, and blood draws.
• Support farrier activities related to hoof care.
• Clean assigned barns and facilities daily; maintain equipment, supplies, and vehicles.
• Report observed health and behavior issues to the Barn Manager.
• Process equine & livestock adoption applications and serve as adoption counselor.
• Drive Humane Society vehicles including box trucks, adoption trailers, and livestock trailers; operate horse trailers (bumper pull and gooseneck).
• Enter animal intake, medical, behavioral, and outcome data into the animal management database.
• Maintain current inventory of program supplies and report shortages.
• Provide excellent customer service and protect confidential customer and donor information.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Humane Society policies and protocols for adoption, cleaning, and medical care.
• Working knowledge of animal breeds, diseases, medical conditions, handling, and behavior.
• Ability to safely and gently handle animals, including those with limited training.
• Strong interpersonal skills; able to build positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and the public.
• Patience, courtesy, and composure under stressful conditions.
• Initiative and adaptability to changing work demands.
• Effective written and verbal communication.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel.
• 2 years of experience handling equines.
• Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree in an animal-related field preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, and moderate noise. Frequent outdoor work in varied weather. Tasks require frequent use of hands, standing, walking, sitting, reaching, and stooping/kneeling/crouching. Must regularly lift/move up to 50 lbs unassisted and up to 80 lbs with assistance. Visual demands include close, distant, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus. Work environment noise level is usually moderate.

Required Professional Licensing or Certifications

• Valid Texas driver’s license.
• Ability to drive a truck pulling a horse trailer (bumper pull or gooseneck) preferred.
