Job Summary

The Greeley City Attorney’s Office is seeking an attorney to join our team. This position may be filled at the Attorney I or Attorney II level, depending on the qualifications of the applicants. The chosen attorney will primarily support and provide legal services to the Water and Sewer Department, Stormwater Department, and Water and Sewer Board in the areas of water law, environmental law, real estate, contracting and procurement, and municipal law. The attorney in this position may also advise other City departments on a variety of other legal issues.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide sound legal advice and representation to the officers, employees, and agencies of the City including representing the City in court proceedings and administrative hearings before municipal and state courts and administrative agencies.
  • Provide case and matter management including motions practice, civil discovery, and depositions. Draft legal briefs. Prepare and present oral arguments.
  • Represent the interests of the City, develop relationships with allied agencies, and coordinate inter-agency efforts that are aligned with City projects.
  • Legal Research & Analysis
    • Conduct detailed legal research on complex topics.
    • Draft legal advice letters, memoranda, and formal written legal opinions.
    • Cookordination work with other attorneys and paralegals.
    • Conduct legal research and analysis on complex topics.

  • Contractual Preparations
    • Prepare contracts and other transactional documents.
    • Draft ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents required to complete city projects and initiatives.
  • Meetings
    • Attend meetings of City departments and work groups to provide analysis of legal issues and to provide legal advice necessary to develop appropriate policies and procedures and to formulate rules and regulations for the administration of City government.
    • Attend and participate as a representative of the City in meetings of local and regional governments and related entities regarding matters of importance to City projects.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree obtained through a four-year college or university program.
  • Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado (or if application is pending, admission to practice within 60 days of hire date).
  • At least 5 years of experience practicing law is required to be considered for an Attorney II position.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas of law: Municipal, Contracts and Procurement, Real Property, Water, Environmental, and/or Public Utilities.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily performed in an office or courtroom environment.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks.
  • Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
  • Light to moderate physical effort.
