Environmental Technician

About the Role

The Manh Choh Project is a greenfield gold deposit in eastern Alaska. Ore will be hauled to Kinross’ Fort Knox mine north of Fairbanks for processing. The mine site is located in the Tetlin Hills, approximately 250 miles southeast of Fort Knox and 10 miles southeast of Tok, with production expected to begin in 2024.

This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of sampling equipment, vehicles, loaders, and forklifts. You will complete routine sampling, inspections, and opacity readings with minimal supervision, ensuring compliance with site permits, plans, pertinent regulations, and EPA guidance. The position involves communication, training, and collaboration with other departments to support environmental compliance.

Responsibilities

• Inspect waste storage areas, maintenance areas, water basins, and camp facilities; monitor wildlife and habitat on the mine site for compliance and report deficiencies to the corresponding department.
• Collect surface and groundwater samples.
• Conduct and record monthly opacity readings.
• Complete various internal and external reports.
• Provide staff assistance to operation and maintenance personnel.
• Adhere to punctuality and regular attendance requirements.
• Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
• Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
• Operate with a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
• Work without risk of harm to self and others.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred; sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
• One year of experience in an environmental profession preferred.
• Working knowledge of basic compliance procedures as they relate to site permits.
• Understanding of sampling procedures, safety rules, company policies, emergency procedures, MSHA requirements, environmental regulations, and guidance documents (or ability to gain this understanding).
• Maintain required certification for opacity readings.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Solid computer skills, including proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet programs.
• Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
• Ability to work with others in a team environment.
• Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
• Progression through the wage scale is contingent upon satisfactory completion of attached checklists.
