About the role

The Environmental Services (EVS) Lead at Houston Methodist is responsible for overseeing daily housekeeping and/or floor maintenance operations in assigned areas. They serve as a resource and expert for staff, creating an environment conducive to safe patient care and assisting in the development of team members' skills and knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Interacts professionally with patients, family, and staff, leading and participating in meetings and huddles to foster a team-focused work unit.
  • Supports employees by providing up-to-date training and departmental communications through rounding and cross-unit work assignments.
  • Facilitates teamwork by anticipating staff needs and responding positively to requests, contributing to the department's overall work effort.
  • Responds promptly and positively to requests for assistance from patients, staff, and visitors, ensuring a healing environment.
  • Performs efficient room cleaning processes to ensure timely patient admissions and monitors workload fluctuations to adjust assignments as needed.
  • Maintains an environment of safety and repairs by tracking, logging, and notifying management of safety and repair needs for equipment, performing safety checks, and ensuring regular maintenance of major housekeeping equipment.
  • Communicates and documents any facility or patient-related issues to management and corrects minor safety hazards.
  • Manages department daily tasks and independently manages time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime.
  • Facilitates strategic staff scheduling in coordination with management to reduce overtime and ensure adequate coverage.
  • Assumes responsibility for growth and development by participating in continuing education and in-service programs and contributing ideas to improve department processes.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience: One year of progressive responsibility in Environmental Services or related field preferred; two years of Environmental Services hospital experience preferred.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Required DOTHAZMAT Certification (DOT) - Houston Methodist US Department Of Transportation Hazardous Materials Certification (renewed every 3 years) within 90 days; DL - Driver License - State Licensure.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
  • Proficient computer skills including, but not limited to, knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
  • Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision including but not limited to organizing workflows and actively participating in problem solving.
  • Demonstrates efficient and safe use of housekeeping equipment and chemicals.
  • Demonstrates the ability to access information both in the department and within the system to support the department as appropriate.

This 725,000-square-foot, full-service, acute-care hospital offers many of the same services as our flagship hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
