Environmental Scientist I

We are seeking an Environmental Scientist with 0–5 years of professional experience to join our Environmental Services department in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This role serves as an “In-House” consultant, assisting senior staff with technical support and regulatory permitting for transportation projects in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties under a districtwide contract with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) - District 6.

This position offers a mix of office and field work across diverse project types. You will work under the direction of senior-level environmental professionals specializing in wetland and upland permitting, and protected species management. Responsibilities

• Assist with transportation projects by coordinating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, planners, and surveyors
• Collect field data, including soil and groundwater sampling, tree surveys, wetland assessments, protected species surveys, and gopher tortoise relocation
• Conduct benthic resource surveys (seagrasses and corals)
• Analyze data, prepare graphics, write technical reports, and prepare environmental permit applications
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field
• Ability to identify Florida trees and wetland plants
• Knowledge of threatened and endangered species in Florida (a plus)
• Must be able to collect data in hot and difficult field conditions, including remote and swampy areas
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills
• Experience with GIS or AutoCAD (a plus)
• Knowledge of Florida and federal permitting rules (a plus)
• PADI or NAUI certifications (preferred, but not required)
• Ability to work independently
• Must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis (no visa sponsorship available)

The role involves both office and field work. Essential functions include:

• Prolonged sitting, use of hands/fingers for computer operation, and reaching with hands and arms
• Speaking and hearing for virtual communication (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams)
• Required vision abilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
• Fieldwork may require navigating hot, difficult, or remote conditions, including swamps
