Tetra Tech is adding an Environmental Scientist to our field team based in Germantown, Md, with field work locations primarily in Frederick, Carroll and Baltimore counties. This position requires U.S. citizenship due to project requirements.

About the Role

This position will provide mid-level geologist or scientist support to various environmental assessment/remediation projects. Work includes due diligence, report preparation, and environmental field work with an estimated 75% field work and travel. Capable of assuming responsibility for routine to complex tasks/projects. Experience in leading field crews is desirable.

  • Assume lead and supporting technical roles for projects
  • Record field data, write reports, generate figures and tables, manage data
  • Perform Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)
  • Conduct environmental due diligence and investigations at CERCLA, RCRA, and other impacted sites
  • Collect soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and waste samples using various sampling techniques
  • Plan and coordinate directly with subcontractors and field personnel
  • Assume supporting roles in proposals and marketing
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in geology or environmental science is required; Master’s degree (MS/MA) is a plus
  • 1-3 years of directly related professional experience and/or training in environmental assessment/remediation
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work at various locations (~75% of the time)
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification preferred; ability to obtain certification within 90 days is required
  • Stormwater pollution prevention compliance experience is a plus
  • Erosion and Sediment Control compliance inspection experience is a plus

Skills

  • Ability to read, research, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical documents, and government regulations
  • Ability to write detailed reports, business correspondence, and procedures suitable for client submittal
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in written form; must be fluent in English
  • Strong technical, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • General computer proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge/experience in geosciences-related software, data evaluation tools, electronic field data collection, or groundwater flow/contaminant transport modeling is desirable but not required
  • Ability to evaluate issues, solve practical problems, and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Physical Demands

  • Sampling work may include lifting, maneuvering, positioning, and operating sampling/testing equipment (pumps, hoses, power cables, hand augers, sampling tools, etc.)
  • Operation of field equipment and movement over rough terrain
  • Ability to traverse and remain motionless for long periods
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs

Work Environment

  • Mix of office work (controlled environment) and field work (outdoor conditions, including adverse weather, dense vegetation, uneven ground, and physical obstacles)
  • Project worksites typically within the eastern U.S., but may include travel across the U.S. and internationally
  • Field project durations may range from one day to several weeks
