About the role

This role focuses on conducting air quality, air monitoring, and water sampling on active construction job sites, primarily at K–12 schools undergoing remodeling or additions. The environmental scientist connects with on-site project managers, performs a variety of environmental tests, interprets results, and supports environmental compliance on construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Visit active construction job sites, primarily at K–12 schools, to perform air quality, air monitoring, and water sampling activities.
  • Cook with on-site project managers to understand project conditions, access requirements, and testing needs before beginning sampling activities.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain environmental monitoring equipment to conduct multiple types of air and water quality tests.
  • Collect environmental samples following established protocols to ensure accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform sample preparation and ensure proper labeling, documentation, and chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Read, interpret, and document test and monitoring results, identifying any deviations or concerns and escalating as needed.
  • Apply principles of environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance while working on job sites.
  • Work independently on job sites once training is complete, managing daily tasks, schedules, and testing requirements with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate with other environmental professionals on larger projects where multiple staff members are assigned.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports of sampling activities, monitoring results, and site observations.
  • Follow all safety protocols and site-specific requirements while working in active construction environments.
  • Support continuous learning and professional growth by gaining hands-on experience on construction sites and preparing for future opportunities in environmental and construction fields.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an environmental-related field such as environmental science, environmental health, environmental safety, industrial hygiene, or a closely related discipline.
  • Knowledge of air quality sampling, air monitoring, and water sampling techniques.
  • Understanding of environmental health and safety (EHS) principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with industrial hygiene concepts and methods.
  • Experience or training in environmental monitoring and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to perform sample collection and sample preparation accurately and consistently.
  • Comfort working in active construction environments, including K–12 school construction and remodeling projects.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and document environmental test results.
  • Capability to work independently on job sites after training, managing tasks and time effectively.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with construction project managers and other site personnel.

Qualifications

  • Construction experience is preferred but not required, as training and on-the-job exposure will be provided.
  • Interest in the construction industry and a desire to gain hands-on experience on job sites.
  • Background or coursework in life sciences, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Experience in laboratory, hygiene, or environmental safety settings is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with EHS programs and environmental health and safety procedures.
  • Motivation to build experience that can support future roles and summer internships in environmental or construction-related fields.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to following established protocols and safety guidelines.
