About the role

Stantec is seeking an Environmental Scientist to lead impactful work across the Gulf region. The position involves supporting projects and key client relationships, leading permitting efforts, coordinating agency communications, overseeing technical assessments, guiding project teams, assisting in client relations, business developments, and project pursuits, preparing proposals, and maintaining compliance with quality assurance and safety plans.

Responsibilities

  • Support projects and key client relationships—from residential and commercial permitting, mitigation/conservation banking, habitat restoration, water resources, transportation, and energy related projects.
  • Lead permitting efforts at the local, state, national, and federal level including agency coordination with USACE, following NEPA, ESA, and CWA, etc., compliance.
  • Lead teams that collect and report on tasks that include wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species surveys and habitat characterizations, land use mapping and vegetation cover classification, and other natural resource-focused surveys.
  • Cook up agency communications, oversee technical assessments, and guide project teams through successful execution.
  • Aid in client relations, business developments and project pursuits, including assisting in the preparation of Statements of Qualifications, meeting with existing and potential clients, representing Stantec at conferences, workshops, etc., and similar activities.
  • Aid in the preparation of proposals, including scopes of work, fee estimates, project set-up and execution of work with senior management assistance.
  • Aid in the preparation of work plans and HSSE plans, assemble project team, delegate tasks and ensure compliance with scope and timely completion of tasks.
  • Maintain compliance with quality assurance plans and safety plans for assigned projects.
  • Provide mentorship to early-career and other mid-level staff, with potential opportunities for direct supervision.

Requirements

Thorough understanding of technical environmental impact analysis methods and sound knowledge of NEPA requirements and related environmental regulations (Section 401, 402, and 404 of the Clean Water Act), as well as state environmental regulations.

Solid knowledge of environmental compliance requirements, as they relate to public and private infrastructure (residential & commercial developments, transportation, stream and habitat restoration, renewable energy, and oil/gas/energy) projects.

Working knowledge of agencies including USACE, USFWS, NOAA, ADCNR and ADEM.

Demonstrated skill and commitment to QA/QC practices.

Demonstrated experience or willingness to manage multiple projects and ability to motivate self and others to overcome obstacles and achieve goals.

Demonstrated ability in collaborative problem-solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates.

Demonstrated leadership in striving to continuously improve technical performance.

Requires flexibility to travel as needed for project and fieldwork.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in environmental science, biological resources or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience providing or managing technical services in a professional services setting, preferable in the Gulf Region (AL, MS, LA & northwest FL).
  • Experience in managing and providing environmental consulting services to project developers in support of project siting, design, and permit applications.
  • Local, state, and Federal compliance and environmental permitting experience required.
  • Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or other applicable professional environmental certification, preferred.

Skills
